What is emo : what does it mean to be emo?

What the heck is emo anyway?
Emo has 2 different definitions. One meaning the type of rock music typically characterized by emotional and expressive, and confessional lyrics. The other, a stereotypical label used to describe a teenager'sway of life.
The music:
It's basically punk rock, except the lyrics are about emotional things rather than being rebelious.
Emo music was first a sub genre of punk rock in the late 80's. But thanks to band DC scene emo music rose to popularity and became a style on its own.
The People:
It is a label describing teens, usually 15-17 year olds who are very emotional (hence the term 'emo'), and depressed. They tend to be very sensitive in their feelings. Exaggerating life's problems and taking things too seriously. In fashion, "emos" are often seen wearing black with bright neon colours that stand out. Guys usually wear very tight skinny jeans, usually in women's clothing. These people might also wear their favourite punk band tees along with vans. Emo girls on the other hand usually wear heavy make up, with eyeliner all around their eyes. And akward hair covering their face. The emo fashion trend is long over, and was very popular in the mid 2009's.

People look down on them too much. I'll never understand why. They're kind, original, smart, creative, and unique human beings. And of course, the whole "emo" thing is a 'stereotypical' label.
What gets under my skin is when people say they cut themselves... even 'non-emos' cut themselves, geez.
Nice hub:)
iiimusicfreak27, how can you say that they're kind, orginal, smart, creative human beings? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on the internet. Some people that label themselves as emos may be everything that you said, but how the hell all the people that choose the emo style can be said to be all of those things is beyond me. Some of them will be nice, some of them will be nasty and everything in between. Just because you like the emo style means absolutely nothing when it comes to deciding how nice, decent, smart or kind others that choose that same style are. Ridiculous.
Emos are usually angsty teens, when they have finished puberty they grow out of it.
I see Emos as a goth punk mix. The goth image was lots of black clothes, black eyeliner, emotional poignant music and a desire not to be pigeonholed. The punk image was harder, anti-establishment and both were young people daring to be different and not falling into the expected life route of work, marriage and children that is expected by society.
I was bullied in my youth for dressing as I liked. I used to be amused by the negative comments. Better to be your own person than be a sheep. It's tough enough for teenages without being bullied for not following the crowd.
Voted up and interesting.
Rain Defence: Emos are not all 'angsty teens'. They are teenagers who are often misunderstood and feel left out there. Just because you DON'T like the style, doesn't mean they're bad people. I was considered an "emo" all through high school all because of how I dressed... the way I dress and the music I listen to doesn't begin to define what kind of person I am and neither does it to the rest of them.
I did not mean that they are ALL what I described -- that's obvious.
That was my opinion. It may be ridiculous to you, but not to me.
Sorry about that SincerelyMxoxo:)
lilmusicfreeak27: Hold in. You didn't read my post. Whether I like the style or not is utterly irrelevant and I never specified whether I did or didn't anyway. What I found ridiculous about your post is that you state that emos are kind, smart, creative etc etc. That's like me saying that tall people are all good at basketball. Sure some are, some aren't. You simply can't generalise like that just because YOU like the style.
Anyway your two comments seem to be saying two different things as in the first you say their style defines what sort of people they are and in the second you say that it doesn't so I'm not really sure what you're trying to say.
It's not really worth arguing about anyhow as it doesn't really have any bearing on the hub, which is explaining emo style to parents who don't have a clue what their kids are on about.
"It's not really worth arguing about anyhow as it doesn't really have any bearing on the hub, which is explaining emo style to parents who don't have a clue what their kids are on about" Exactly, so why call me out on my comment??
And again, you took it too literally. OBVIOUSLY not everyone is a certain thing no matter what group we're looking at.
Bottom line is, you took what I said too literally and began a worthless argument by saying my comment is ridiculous...

Welcome to HubPages. Well I learned something new today, I did not know what it meant either and my kids use the term all the time, thanks
